In a marriage of luxury, performance, and sustainability, former Tesla executive John Vo sets sail into the future of maritime recreation with Blue Innovations Group (BIG). Vo, previously the global head of manufacturing for Tesla, founded BIG in Pinellas Park, Florida, marking his transition from electric cars to electric boats.
The debut product, the R30, is a cutting-edge day boat fueled by a Tesla-inspired dual-motor setup. This fully-electric luxury power boat boasts a 30-foot length, a 10-foot beam, and ample space for up to twelve passengers.
While the boat has undergone testing around the St. Pete Pier, the public will witness its grand reveal in December at the official launch event. Initial glimpses through CGI renderings showcase a partially enclosed cockpit with a half-walkaround configuration. Noteworthy features include a rooftop solar panel complemented by two slide-out solar panels, tripling the solar array's surface area.
John Vo emphasizes the R30's aim to deliver an unparalleled boating experience, blending safety, performance, style, and environmental friendliness. The propulsion system is labeled "pollution-free" and silent, driven by two separate 298-kW electric motors generating a total of 800hp. With a top speed targeted at 39 knots (45 mph or 72 kph), the R30 aims to redefine electric boating.
At its core is a 221-kWh battery pack providing up to eight hours of runtime on a single charge. The boat supports DC fast-charging, enabling an 80% recharge in just 45 minutes. The air-conditioned cabin, convertible dinette, kitchenette, and bathroom with sink and bidet contribute to the vessel's luxurious design.
The helm features a modern yoke steering and dual-touchscreen infotainment, while exterior spaces include a sunbathing deck at the bow and a stern with fold-down walls, transforming into a mini beach club.
Currently, BIG engineers are enhancing the e-boat's range and optimizing software. John Vo envisions a four-model lineup, with the R30 as the flagship model. The R30 is set to officially launch on December 16 in St. Petersburg, Florida, with reservations already open. Priced around $300,000, deliveries are expected to commence in Q3 2024. As BIG sets sail, it seeks to redefine electric boating, mirroring the transformative impact Tesla had on the automotive landscape.
